Picnic + and other news

Picnic + and other news

Hey youth!  This Sunday, October 19, is the annual church-wide "Picnic +!"  We'll be hanging out in the church parking lot for one big picnic PLUS pumpkin painting, football watching, bounce houses, and more.  Make sure you wear GREEN in honor of "going green!"  Abe, Amanda, and Erin will have a tailgate party to visit, and then all of us will meet at 5:00pm for a game of Ultimate Frisbee with Cameron.  Finally, at 6:30, we'll get together for some announcements and fun in the pumpkin patch.  See you there!

Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins!  As you know, the youth pumpkin patch fundraiser is going on now through October 31.  Without pumpkin patch, we would not be able to have guest speakers and musicians (think Wayne Kerr) come on our trips and retreats, offer Confirmation free of cost, or provide youth scholarships.  All youth, parents, and A Team members are needed to make pumpkin patch happen!  Visit www.cumcym.org to sign up for a sales shift today.

Special visitors!  The Southwestern University Chorale will be singing in all three traditional worship services this Sunday, October 19th, so please join us in welcoming them!  Southwestern is a United Methodist affiliated college in Georgetown, Texas.  HEROES youth, also take note of this: Tom Oliver, Vice President for Enrollment Services at Southwestern, will be at a table in the narthex following all three services.  If you or your family has an interest in Southwestern, please stop by and meet him!

T.A.G. Time

T.A.G. Time

In honor of pumpkin patch, take a minute to read and think about the story below.  There are also some questions after your reading and a Scripture that goes along with the story.  Enjoy!

"A girl was asked by her friend, 'What is it like to be a Christian?'  The girl replied, 'It is like being a pumpkin.  God picks you from the patch, brings you in and washes all the dirt off of you.  Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.  He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed.  Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.'"

Scripture to read: Galatians 5:16-25
To think about...

  • What kinds of dirt and yucky stuff fill your life these days?
  • Why do you think God cares to remove those things?
  • What might it be like to live a clean, fresh, and beautiful life for God?
  • How can the light of Jesus Christ shine in your life for all to see?  What difference will it make?

Title

Hey Parents!
We'll be highlighting Pumpkin Patch throughout October because it is such an important part of the youth ministry. Lots of people don't know that money raised in pumpkin sales allows our youth ministry to bring in guest speakers and musicians for Fall Retreat, give scholarships to youth who might otherwise not be able to participate in events and programming, and offer Confirmation to church families without cost. Pumpkin Patch does not happen, however, without the help of committed volunteers. Youth are happy and willing to work shifts after school, but we need parents and A Team members to fill daytime shifts from 10:00am-4:00pm. Please take a minute to sign up online to volunteer at www.cumcym.org .  Working sales shifts is a great and fun way to enjoy fall weather, spend time with friends (you can bring one to work with you!), and meet new people from the church and community.
